Support Local in Bastrop, TX, this Holiday Season!
17 Nov 2023
News
Bastrop, TX, is a community that cares for its own. There is no time this is more apparent than the holiday season. Bastrop Economic Development Corporation would like to thank all of our small businesses and nonprofits for the joy they bring to residents and their profound effect on the local economy. While supporting them year-round is important, there are two days this year when we can display Bastrop’s caring nature. November 25 is Small Business Saturday, and November 28 is Giving Tuesday, each the perfect time to celebrate these entities and the copious benefits they provide.
Small Business Saturday
Small Business Saturday takes place annually on the Saturday after Thanksgiving when people say their “thank yous” and are in the giving spirit. American Express founded Small Business Saturday in 2010 to encourage consumers to shop small during the holiday season. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has cosponsored the celebration since 2011, which has grown into a movement supporting small businesses.
In November of last year, American Express reported the results of its 2022 Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey. The study found that Small Business Saturday drove approximately $17.9 billion in sales in 2022 and that $0.68 of every dollar spent at a U.S. small business stays within the local area. Not only do small businesses strengthen local economies, but they also generated 63 percent of new jobs from 1995 to 2021.
This year, Small Business Saturday falls on November 25th, and we hope that residents of Bastrop consider showing their support and shopping local! This meaningful day can act as an excuse to treat yourself to some of your favorite local mom-and-pop shops, independent retailers, restaurants, cafes, and service providers while giving back at the same time. We also recommend that Bastrop-based small businesses look into these resources provided by American Express and tips from Shopify as a marketing guide for Small Business Saturday.
Giving Tuesday
Giving Tuesday was launched in 2012 to inspire people to do good and give back in communities worldwide. It is now celebrated annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, and this year falls on November 28th. Like Small Business Saturday, it has become a movement promoting generosity and collaboration with nonprofits and charities everywhere.
Last year, GivingTuesday raised $3.1 billion in one day for charitable causes nationwide. The nonprofit sector is the third largest employer in the U.S., providing approximately 12.3 million jobs according to the most recent data from 2016.
Nonprofits and charities in Bastrop continue to make a positive difference by helping children, animals, the underprivileged, the environment, and more. We hope that Bastrop community members will consider making a monetary donation or volunteering to these organizations.
