Marketing and Small Business Development Manager

The Marketing and Small Business Development Manager is responsible for the following:

Marketing:

Responsibilities include creating and collaborating on high-profile marketing initiatives, including branding, strategic research, writing, presenting, creative development and production of advertising and placement, developing, negotiating, and implementing promotions and sponsorships for integrated regional advertising campaigns and cooperative programs.

Small Business Development:

Oversees programs and projects relating to small business recruitment, development and expansion including working with a variety of small businesses and entrepreneurs on business start-ups and incubation. Responds to proposals and inquiries from small businesses and entrepreneurs, consultants, and affiliated economic development allies.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Develops and maintains relationships with local and state economic development allies, elected officials, consultants, and other site location professionals.
  • Maintains current inventory of available commercial and industrial buildings and sites.
  • Develops and maintains appropriate databases to support economic development activities as needed.
  • Supports the Economic Development Program Manager with workforce development strategies to assist existing industries and local businesses.
  • Completes special projects as assigned.

Work is subject to irregular hours (including evenings, weekends, and holidays), sometimes on short notice. This position performs related duties, as required. The incumbent is expected to exercise considerable initiative and judgment in carrying out assigned duties.

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Journalism, Business Administration, Economic Development or Municipal Governance.
  • Seven to nine years of experience directing and implementing initiatives in economic development, business attraction, tourism, marketing, public relations, city management or a field related to the program area.

Essential Functions for Success:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required with the general public, staff, City employees, vendors, management, public officials, business owners, business developers, real estate executives, media, marketing executives, and other support professionals in order to create awareness of Economic Development departmental services/offerings and administer assigned projects.
  • Presents information to public officials, small business owners, entrepreneurs, developers and real estate investors to promote and deliver economic development activities and programs. Prepares written documents such as reports, detailed analytical documents, media releases, requests for proposals, departmental news and information and correspondence in response to inquiries about departmental issues. 
  • Manual/Physical: Operates a motor vehicle requiring a standard Texas Driver’s License for travel to various locations to give presentations, attend meetings with business owners, prospective clients, and other general meetings. Operates a variety of standard office equipment including a personal computer. Performs some light physical labor. Meets scheduling and attendance requirements, including non-traditional work hours.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Theories and principles of high-profile marketing campaigns, advertising, social media, promotion and public relations techniques.
  • Economic development principles, practices, and techniques.
  • Statistical and financial analyses and presentation.
  • Laws, ordinances, regulations, and policies of various government entities as they affect the business community and economic development efforts. 
  • Marketing techniques and economic development incentives.

Must Be:

  • Self-motivated, confident, resourceful, a team player, who uses sound judgment.
  • Able to follow written and oral instruction.
  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, citizens, small business owners, business executives, and site selectors.

Salary Range:

Salary is commensurate with experience. Range is $100,000 - $110,000.
