"Labor of love": Bastrop EDC hopeful Art Institute of Austin could begin in-person classes in summer

While the $2.9 million Downtown Bastrop building set to house the Art Institute of Austin at 921 Main St. has been completed, the Art Institute is still in the process of moving in, according to Bastrop Economic Development Corporation officials.

In-person classes at the building, which were previously estimated to begin this spring, are now projected to begin this summer, according to the BEDC.

Pierre Lafaille, the head of the admissions department for the Art Institute, didn't return a request for comment Wednesday.

During the April 13 Bastrop City Council meeting, BEDC project manager Jean Riemenschneider said the building, which the BEDC owns, has been completed, and according to her presentation to the council, it received a certificate of substantial completion in December.

“It has been a labor of love and we are so proud that it is a part of our community and that the Art Institute will be calling that home and opening their doors, we hope, by summer of 2021 for in-person classes,” Riemenschneider said.
