Higher Education

Six colleges and universities are within an hour's drive of Bastrop and nearly 45% of the Austin metro population hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. 

These institutions of higher learning are preparing the local workforce for tomorrow’s challenges. Recognized throughout the world as a premier university, both Texas A&M and the University of Texas consistently rank within the Top 50 Colleges within the United States. In addition, there are private universities known for their unique course offerings and a local community college focused on flexible learning and workforce training. With such a wide variety of colleges and universities to choose from, recent high school graduates and working professionals are heading to school to continue their education and advance their careers. As part of the Austin metro region, Bastrop’s workforce is over 1 million strong and growing. Due to the number of people graduating from local colleges and universities, this workforce is expanding every year and employers have talent at all levels of experience to choose from.

Austin Community College

The Austin Community College District is a public community college system serving the Austin, Texas metropolitan area and surrounding Central Texas communities. Austin Community College is a nationally recognized two-year college. ACC serves Central Texas as the primary gateway to higher education and technical training.

University of Texas

The University of Texas at Austin is a public research university in Austin, Texas. It was founded in 1883 and is the flagship institution of the University of Texas System. Academically, it’s known nationwide for its business, engineering, communication, and geology colleges. In addition, the University of Texas at Austin School of Law is ranked #16 in the United States.

St. Edward's University

St. Edward's University is a private, Catholic university in Austin, Texas. The most popular majors at St. Edward's University include: Business, Management, Marketing, and Related Support Services; Communication, Journalism, and Related Programs; Biological and Biomedical Sciences; Psychology; and Visual and Performing Arts.

Concordia University

Concordia University Texas is a private, coeducational institution of liberal arts and sciences located in northwest Austin. The university offers undergraduate, graduate and online degrees as well as an Adult Degree Program for part-time and returning students.

Texas A&M

Texas A&M has a satellite location at Austin Community College. Texas A&M University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral degrees. The Texas-Chevron A&M Engineering Academy at Austin Community College is an excellent way for students to earn an engineering degree close to home. 

Texas State University

Texas State University is a public research university. The Texas State University main campus is located in San Marcos, Texas, midway between Austin and San Antonio along Interstate 35. The most popular majors at Texas State University include: Multi-/Interdisciplinary Studies, Other; Psychology, General; Business Administration and Management, General; Kinesiology and Exercise Science; and Marketing/Marketing Management, General Studies.
