Corey and Sarah McElmurray were drawn to the “charming location” of Bastrop’s Main Street to open their dynamic salon, Urban Beauty Bastrop. “I came across the Luminere House salon on (1011) Main Street where I was able to rent a chair a couple of days a week – to take off a little stress from my daily commute to Austin,” Sarah said. Sarah had been working at an Austin salon for 20 years. The couple had moved to Bastrop in 2022.
After a few months of Sarah working at Luminere House, the McElmurrays bought the business when it became available. “We were given the opportunity to take over the salon on Main Street,” Sarah said. “We jumped at the chance to be a part of the charming area of Main Street. The kindness of the community definitely played a role on our choosing this location – we opened our salon on March 1.”
Urban Beauty Bastrop specializes in custom color, precision haircuts, hair extensions, hair treatments, and ‘lash and brow’ services. “We also offer top-level hair products and my beautiful handmade jewelry for sale,” Sarah said. “It’s our goal to bring urban style to downtown Bastrop.” The business also joined the Bastrop Chamber of Commerce.
Sarah continues to take clients behind the chair daily, although booking must be done well in advance since most of her previous clients in Austin now make the drive to Bastrop to continue with her services. Urban Beauty Bastrop plans to offer an education program for beginning stylists as well as an extension program for stylists looking to learn that art.
Urban Beauty holds a monthly fun event – Blowouts and Bubbles – where complimentary Champagne, wine, and snacks are served for guests who enjoy a relaxing massaging shampoo and conditioner – “with the music turned up for a fun atmosphere,” Sarah said. “We usually bring in another local business to be a part of the event. Our last event featured Sage and Co. boutique on Main Street. (The owner) brought in a jewelry line to offer to our guests.”
Corey plays a major role in the salon and around the Bastrop community. Corey owned a marketing business the past 15 years which provided “an easy transition for marketing our new salon,” Sarah said. Corey handles the marketing and pretty much everything else at Urban Beauty Bastrop, “except doing hair.” With Corey’s background from owning his own marketing business, “getting our name out there, and clients in the door, is his number one priority,” Sarah said. You can also catch Corey out and about, handing out Urban Beauty Bastrop’s sample bags and meeting new people.
